Rhinoplasty types can be performed using different techniques depending on the patient’s needs and the structural characteristics of the nose. The most common types are open rhinoplasty, closed rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, and ethnic rhinoplasty. Each is planned for different purposes.
Open rhinoplasty is performed through a small incision made at the lower part of the nose, allowing the surgeon to directly visualize the internal nasal structures. This method is generally preferred in complex cases or situations requiring revision and provides detailed reshaping capabilities.
Closed rhinoplasty is performed through incisions made inside the nostrils and leaves no visible scars. The recovery period may be shorter than with the open technique. It is applied to patients who require fewer structural changes.
Revision rhinoplasty is a corrective procedure performed when the desired outcome has not been achieved after a previous nose surgery. Ethnic rhinoplasty, on the other hand, is performed using specialized techniques to achieve natural-looking results that complement the facial structure of individuals from different ethnic backgrounds.

What Is Open Rhinoplasty?
Open rhinoplasty is a surgical approach performed by making a small incision in the area between the nostrils. This technique provides a clearer view of the internal nasal structures and cartilage tissues. It may be preferred especially in individuals who have previously undergone nose surgery or in cases involving structurally complex problems.
From the patient’s perspective, the open technique may generally create the impression of a more extensive procedure. However, the surgeon’s ability to work while directly visualizing the nasal anatomy allows for more controlled modifications in certain cases. During the healing process, the incision scar generally becomes less noticeable over time, although this may vary depending on individual healing characteristics.
How Is Closed Rhinoplasty Performed?
Closed rhinoplasty is a technique in which all incisions are made inside the nose. The absence of any visible external incision makes this method appealing to many patients. It is generally considered in cases requiring correction of a nasal hump or more limited shape modifications.
It should also be remembered that the closed technique is not suitable for every nasal structure. The surgeon’s experience and the patient’s nasal anatomy are determining factors in selecting the appropriate method.
What Does Functional Rhinoplasty Mean?
Functional rhinoplasty is an approach that focuses on improving breathing function rather than the appearance of the nose. Problems such as a deviated nasal septum or narrowing inside the nose may lead to breathing difficulties that affect a person’s daily life.
Patients considering this type of surgery generally describe complaints such as snoring at night, breathing through the mouth, or becoming tired quickly during exercise. Functional rhinoplasty may sometimes be performed together with aesthetic modifications. However, the goals and priorities differ for every patient; therefore, the evaluation should always be carried out by a specialist physician.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty
Cosmetic rhinoplasty aims to improve the harmony between the nose and the rest of the face. Conditions such as a drooping nasal tip, a dorsal hump, a wide nasal structure, or asymmetry are addressed within this scope. The important point is that the nose is evaluated not in isolation but as part of the entire face.
Patients generally seek a “natural-looking” result. Factors such as facial features, skin thickness, and the existing nasal structure all influence the outcome. It is particularly emphasized that there is no single ideal nose shape that is suitable for everyone in cosmetic rhinoplasty.
What Is Revision Rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty is considered for individuals who have previously undergone nose surgery but are dissatisfied with the outcome or are experiencing functional problems. These procedures are generally considered more complex than the initial operation.
Patient experiences indicate that having realistic expectations before undergoing revision surgery is particularly important. The condition of the remaining cartilage from the previous surgery, skin quality, and the healing process are all determining factors in planning these operations. Therefore, revision rhinoplasty should always be evaluated by an experienced specialist.
Tip Rhinoplasty (Tip Plasty)
Tip rhinoplasty is intended to reshape only the nasal tip without altering the overall bony structure of the nose. The width, drooping, or asymmetry of the nasal tip may be addressed within this scope.
Patients considering this procedure generally desire a more limited change. The shorter operation time and smaller treatment area may create an expectation of an easier recovery process for some individuals. However, the decision should be made with consideration of the relationship between the nasal tip and the overall facial appearance.
Differences Between Male and Female Rhinoplasty
When evaluating rhinoplasty types, gender-related expectations may also be considered. Male rhinoplasty generally aims for a straighter, stronger, and more masculine nasal structure that harmonizes with the face, whereas softer contours may be preferred in female rhinoplasty.
Rather than following a fixed aesthetic concept, this distinction is considered according to the individual’s facial structure and expectations. Since every patient’s perception of beauty is different, the surgical plan should always be personalized.
Is Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty an Option?
Non-surgical rhinoplasty involves making temporary changes to the shape of the nose using dermal fillers. Individuals with minor asymmetries or a slight dorsal hump may be interested in this method.
However, it should be understood that non-surgical rhinoplasty is not a permanent solution and may not be suitable for every nasal structure. It is important to provide detailed information about the risks and limitations of the procedure.
Which Type of Rhinoplasty Is Suitable for Whom?
When choosing among different rhinoplasty types, aesthetic expectations are not the only determining factor. Breathing problems, the anatomical characteristics of the nose, skin thickness, and the individual’s overall health should all be evaluated together.
For this reason, the concept of the “most suitable approach for the individual” takes precedence over the idea of the “best method.” Comparisons made without specialist evaluation may be misleading and may fail to meet expectations.
