Asian noses are generally characterized by a low nasal root, a wide nasal base, and a rounded nasal tip. These features require the use of different techniques in rhinoplasty.
The aim of Asian rhinoplasty is to achieve a natural-looking result that is harmonious with the facial features. The nasal root is generally raised, and the nasal tip is made more defined.
Because of the thick skin structure, the healing process may take longer. In addition, implants or cartilage grafts are among the methods frequently used.
With proper surgical planning, successful results can be achieved in Asian noses both aesthetically and functionally. Naturalness is the most important goal.

How Are Asian Noses Generally Defined?
Although every person’s nose is different, some general characteristics can be mentioned. Asian noses are generally closer to medium-type noses, medically classified as “mesorrhine.”
This generally means that they have distinctive characteristics that differ from Caucasian-type noses, which are long and narrow, or African-type noses, which are broad and flat. A shorter structure, a less prominent nasal bridge, and more rounded contours fall within this definition.
What Are the Differences Between Asian Noses and Other Nose Types?
Noses can roughly be considered in three main groups. Leptorrhine refers to long and narrow noses commonly seen in people of Caucasian or Indo-European origin. Platyrrhine refers to broader and flatter noses typical of people of African origin.
Asian noses are generally mesorrhine, positioned between these two types. They have features such as a lower nasal root, a nasal bridge of variable height, and a rounded, less projecting nasal tip. These structural differences also determine the surgical approach.
Are All Asian Noses the Same? What Is the Level of Diversity Among Asian Noses?
Definitely not. It would not be correct to speak of a single standard “Asian nose.” Asia is a very large continent, and different ethnic groups have their own distinctive nasal structures.
For example, a person of Japanese origin may have a nose with a higher bridge and sharper contours, while a person of Chinese origin may have a flatter nose. The noses of people from different countries such as Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines also vary. Therefore, rather than generalizing when planning surgery, it is necessary to focus on the individual’s own unique structure.
What Are the Typical Anatomical Characteristics of Asian Noses in Summary?
To provide a general summary, some common characteristics frequently seen in Asian noses are as follows:
A thicker skin structure, weaker nasal cartilages, a lower nasal bridge, a rounder and less defined nasal tip, wider nasal wings and base, a shorter and more recessed central column between the nostrils, known as the columella, and smaller nasal bones. The combination of these features requires a specialized approach in aesthetic surgery.
Why Is Skin Thickness Important for Asian Noses?
One of the most distinctive characteristics of Asian noses is perhaps their generally thicker skin structure. Not only the skin but also the underlying layers of fat and connective tissue may be denser. The skin also tends to be oilier.
This thickness is not the same throughout the nose. It is thicker at the nasal root and in areas close to the tip, while it is thinner in the middle section. The skin becomes especially thicker and tighter toward the nasal tip and adheres more firmly to the underlying tissues.
How Does Skin Thickness Affect the Surgical Result in Asian Noses?
Thick skin may conceal the details of the bone and cartilage structure created internally through surgery. In other words, no matter how delicately the internal structure is shaped, thick skin may not fully reflect it and acts almost like a covering. This may sometimes create the need to thin excess tissue during surgery.
Another important effect is on the healing process. Swelling, especially at the nasal tip, takes longer to resolve completely compared with individuals who have thin skin. This period may last up to one year. Therefore, it is very important to set expectations correctly before surgery.
What Does Weak Cartilage Structure Mean in Asian Noses?
The cartilages that provide the shape and support of the nose are generally different in Asian noses. In particular, the lower cartilages forming the nasal tip are often weaker, smaller, and thinner than those in Caucasian noses.
This is one of the main reasons for the rounder, less projecting, and less defined nasal tip frequently seen in Asian noses. In other words, the reason the nasal tip is not sufficiently elevated or pointed lies in the structural weakness of the cartilage framework supporting it.
How Is Cartilage Deficiency Corrected in Asian Nose Surgery?
Weak cartilages generally make standard rhinoplasty techniques, such as reduction and shaping with sutures, insufficient. Therefore, the fundamental approach in Asian rhinoplasty is to strengthen the cartilages and create a new structure for the nose.
For this purpose, cartilage pieces, known as grafts, taken from the patient’s own body are generally used. Cartilage is most commonly taken from the nasal septum. However, if this source is insufficient in Asian patients, cartilage may need to be taken from the ear or rib. These grafts are used to provide support and shape to the nose.
What Are the Differences in Bone Structure in Asian Noses?
The bony structure in the upper part of the nose also shows differences. In Asian individuals, the nasal bones are generally shorter and less prominent. They also tend to be smaller in height and width.
In addition, the nasal root, or radix, which is the deepest point where the nose meets the forehead, is generally lower. The small bony projection at the nasal base, known as the anterior nasal spine, is also often less developed. These bony characteristics are important details that must be considered in surgical planning.
What Does a Low Nasal Root Change in Asian Noses?
A lower nasal root, meaning a lower starting point of the nose, directly affects the procedure used to raise the nasal bridge in aesthetic surgery.
The starting point of the filler, implant, or cartilage graft used for augmentation is adjusted accordingly. In Asian noses, augmentation generally begins at the level of the pupils, while in people with a higher nasal root, this starting point may be positioned higher. This detail is important for creating a natural transition between the nose and forehead.
What Is the Nasal Bridge Generally Like in Asian Noses?
In Asian noses, the nasal bridge, meaning the line extending from the nasal root to the tip, is generally lower, flatter, or only slightly prominent compared with Caucasian noses. A pronounced dorsal hump is less common.
This is the main reason why one of the most frequently performed procedures in Asian rhinoplasty is raising the nasal bridge, known as dorsal augmentation. The aim is to create a more defined and aesthetically balanced nasal profile.
Why Does the Nasal Tip Look Rounder in Asian Noses?
There are several reasons why the nasal tip appears rounder, less defined, and “bulbous.” First, as mentioned earlier, the cartilages supporting the nasal tip, known as the lower lateral cartilages, are generally weaker and smaller. Since these cartilages cannot provide sufficient support, the tip spreads.
The second reason is that the nasal skin is generally thicker and the underlying fatty tissue is more abundant. This thick covering conceals the fine details of the underlying cartilages and gives the nasal tip a fuller, rounder appearance.
Is the Main Goal in Asian Rhinoplasty to Reduce or Enlarge the Nose?
The basic philosophy of Asian rhinoplasty is generally different from that of Caucasian rhinoplasty. While reduction procedures such as removing a hump or making the tip smaller are frequently performed in Caucasian rhinoplasty, the main goal in Asian rhinoplasty is generally augmentation.
In other words, the aim is generally not to make the nose smaller but, on the contrary, to raise and enlarge certain areas and make the nose structurally stronger. This fundamental difference affects the entire planning and techniques of the surgery.
Why Is Augmentation Generally Performed in Asian Nose Surgery?
The reason augmentation and support are the main goals is the typical anatomical characteristics of Asian noses. As mentioned earlier, the generally low nasal bridge, insufficient projection of the nasal tip, and weak cartilages make this approach necessary.
Additional materials, such as an implant or the patient’s own cartilage, are needed to raise the low nasal bridge, make the flat nasal tip more defined, and provide lasting shape and support by strengthening the weak cartilages.
What Are the Usual Aesthetic Expectations for Asian Noses?
People considering Asian rhinoplasty generally want their noses to look more prominent and defined. A higher nasal bridge, a more elevated and pointed nasal tip, and narrower nasal wings are frequently expressed preferences.
However, an important point is that most people do not want a completely “Western” nose. The aim is generally to preserve their own ethnic characteristics while achieving a nose that is more harmonious with their face, natural, and aesthetically pleasing. Establishing this balance is very important in surgical planning.
Is It Possible to Preserve Ethnic Identity in Asian Rhinoplasty?
It is definitely possible and should even be the goal. The modern understanding of rhinoplasty aims to reveal a person’s natural beauty by improving their existing features and making them harmonious with their face, rather than transforming them into a completely different person.
In Asian rhinoplasty, the aim is not to erase the person’s Asian identity but to create a more aesthetically balanced and attractive nose while respecting that identity. A skilled surgeon achieves aesthetic goals while preserving the person’s ethnic characteristics and obtaining a harmonious result.
Why Is the Preoperative Consultation Very Important for Asian Noses?
A detailed consultation and evaluation before surgery are the cornerstone of successful Asian rhinoplasty. During this consultation, not only what you want but also the current anatomical structure of your nose is examined in detail.
Factors such as your skin thickness, the condition of your cartilages, and your bone structure are analyzed. What can be achieved within the limits allowed by the structure of your nose is discussed together with your preferences. Expectations are clarified through computer simulations or sample photographs. In this way, you know what to expect, and your surgeon can create the most appropriate personalized plan for you.
How Is a Surgical Plan Created for Asian Noses?
First, photographs of your nose are taken from every angle, and a detailed physical examination is performed. Many factors are evaluated, including skin thickness, cartilage strength, nasal bridge height, nasal tip shape and projection, and nasal base width.
Your aesthetic expectations are then listened to. In light of all this information, details are determined, such as which areas will be treated, whether augmentation or other procedures will be performed, which material will be used if augmentation is planned, whether an implant or your own tissue, and which cartilage grafts will be required. A personalized surgical plan is created for you.
Which Materials Are Used to Raise the Nasal Bridge in Asian Noses?
Two main groups of materials are basically used to raise the nasal bridge. These are synthetic implants, known as alloplasts, and the patient’s own tissues, known as autologous grafts.
Synthetic implants are produced in laboratories, with silicone and Gore-Tex, or ePTFE, being the best known. The patient’s own tissues are generally cartilages taken from the nasal septum, ear, or rib. Fascia, meaning the muscle membrane, taken from the temple area may also sometimes be used. The choice is made together with your doctor depending on many factors.
Is a Gore-Tex (ePTFE) Implant a Good Option for Asian Noses?
Gore-Tex, or ePTFE, is a synthetic implant that can integrate more effectively with tissue because of its porous structure. This feature may reduce the risk of displacement and may cause less capsule formation. It is a biocompatible material.
However, it is more expensive than silicone. It is more difficult to shape and remove if necessary. Its porous structure may theoretically harbor infection, and some volume loss may occur over time. Nevertheless, it can be a good alternative in suitable cases.
Why May Our Own Cartilage Be Preferred in Asian Nose Surgery?
Using the person’s own tissues, known as autologous grafts, especially cartilage, is considered the safest method in terms of biocompatibility. Since the body does not recognize this tissue as foreign, risks such as infection and extrusion of the implant are much lower.
It generally provides more permanent and natural results in the long term. However, using your own cartilage requires an additional procedure to harvest cartilage from the septum, ear, or rib, and it may not always be possible to find a sufficient amount of suitable cartilage.
When Is Rib Cartilage Required for Asian Noses?
Rib cartilage is generally the last cartilage source considered in rhinoplasty. However, it may be indispensable in some situations. It is especially preferred when significant augmentation or structural support is required at the nasal bridge or tip.
Rib cartilage is also needed when the nasal septum or ear cartilage is insufficient or cannot be used because of previous surgeries. It is frequently used in revision surgery. It provides a large amount of cartilage but requires an additional surgical procedure for harvesting.
What Is the Diced Cartilage Technique for Asian Noses?
The diced cartilage technique, known as Diced Cartilage Fascia or DC-F, is a method that has become popular in recent years. In this technique, cartilage generally taken from the rib is divided into very small pieces, almost like minced meat.
These small cartilage particles are then wrapped in fascia, usually taken from the temple area, to create a sausage-like structure. This method is used especially for raising the nasal bridge. Its advantages include eliminating the risk of warping seen with solid cartilage and providing a smoother contour.
How Are Weak Nasal Tip Cartilages Strengthened in Asian Noses?
Weak nasal tip cartilages in Asian noses generally cannot be shaped as desired with simple sutures or reduction. Therefore, structural grafting is required to support the nasal tip and make it more elevated and defined.
This means placing supportive pieces prepared from the patient’s own cartilage, taken from the septum, ear, or rib, into the nasal tip. These grafts create a new and stronger nasal tip framework by taking over the role of the weak cartilages or supporting them.
What Does a Septal Extension Graft (SEG) Do in Asian Noses?
A Septal Extension Graft, or SEG, is one of the structural grafts most frequently used in Asian rhinoplasty to support the nasal tip, increase its projection, and sometimes lengthen a short nose.
This cartilage piece is fixed to the lower edge of the septum, which is the central partition of the nose, and is positioned forward toward the nasal tip like an extension. It determines the new position of the nasal tip and provides strong support. It is generally prepared from the patient’s own septal, ear, or rib cartilage.
How Is a Shield Graft Used in Nasal Tip Shaping for Asian Noses?
As its name suggests, a shield graft is a shield-shaped piece of cartilage placed at the very front of the nasal tip, immediately beneath the skin. Its purpose is to give the nasal tip greater definition, prominence, and a slight point.
It is generally placed over an underlying support graft such as an SEG. It helps the nasal tip appear more triangular and aesthetically pleasing. It is usually prepared from ear or septal cartilage. Proper sizing and placement are important for a natural appearance.
How Are Wide Nasal Wings Narrowed in Asian Noses?
The procedure performed to narrow wide nasal wings and the base is called alar base reduction. Several different techniques may be used.
If the problem is that the wings flare outward, a wedge-shaped piece is removed from where the wing meets the cheek. If the problem is the width of the nasal base, some tissue is removed from the base of the nostril. Sometimes both procedures may be combined. The aim is to make the nasal base more harmonious with the other facial features.
Is Nose Lengthening Surgery Performed for Asian Noses?
Yes, in some cases Asian noses may be shorter in proportion to the rest of the face. If this is the case and a more aesthetically balanced proportion is desired, it is possible to lengthen the nose.
This procedure is generally performed by positioning structural grafts, such as a Septal Extension Graft, which is used to support the nasal tip, in a specific way. The graft increases the overall length of the nose by pushing the nasal tip not only forward but also downward.
